The Roman Road System

Roman roads in the land of the Bible are often attested through milestones, some of which contain inscriptions including the name of an emperor or official. These "speaking stones" do not date back to the time of Jesus' mission. It is likely, however, that many attested routes predate their milestones, especially when they follow the easiest courses between cities of the Herodian period.

In drawing the Roman roads, I have followed the research of Dr. Israel Roll, as it appears in Yoram Tsafrir, Leah Di Segni and Judith Green, Tabula Imperii Romani: Iudaea-Palaestina, Maps and Gazetteer (Jerusalem: Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, 1992). For a detailed presentation of Dr. Roll's research against a background of satellite imagery, the student may also consult the Holy Land Satellite Atlas, Vols. 1 and 2 (Nicosia, Cyprus: Rohr Productions, 1999).
