Jeremiah 49:19“Behold, one will come up like
a lion from the thickets of the Jordan against a perennially watered pasture;
for in an instant I will make him run away from it, and whoever is chosen I
shall appoint over it. For who is like Me, and who will summon Me into
court? And who then is the shepherd who can stand against Me?”
The centrality of ShechemGenesis 12:6Abram passed through the land
as far as the site of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanite was
then in the land. Genesis 33:18Now Jacob came safely to the
city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram,
and camped before the city. Deuteronomy 11:29-30“It shall come about, when the LORD your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, that you shall place the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. Are they not across the Jordan, west of the way toward the sunset, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, beside the oaks of Moreh?” Joshua 24:
1Then Joshua gathered all the
tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel and for their
heads and their judges and their officers; and they presented themselves before
God.
25So Joshua made a covenant with
the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.
32Now they buried the bones of
Joseph, which the sons of Israel brought up from Egypt, at Shechem, in the
piece of ground which Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor the father of
Shechem for one hundred pieces of money; and they became the inheritance of
Joseph’s sons. Judges 9:3-6And his mother’s relatives
spoke all these words on his behalf in the hearing of all the leaders of
Shechem; and they were inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our
relative.” They gave him seventy pieces of silver from the
house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows,
and they followed him. Then he went to his father’s house at Ophrah
and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But
Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.
And all the men of Shechem and all Beth-millo assembled together, and they went
and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar which was in Shechem. 1 Kings 12:
1Then Rehoboam went to Shechem,
for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. 25Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived there. And he went out from there and built Penuel. John 4:4-7And He had to pass through
Samaria. So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the
parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph; and Jacob’s
well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by
the well. It was about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samaria
to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” Genesis 35:4So they gave to Jacob all the
foreign gods which they had and the rings which were in their ears, and Jacob
hid them under the oak which was near Shechem. Deuteronomy 11:29-32“It shall come about, when the LORD your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, that you shall place the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. Are they not across the Jordan, west of the way toward the sunset, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, beside the oaks of Moreh? For you are about to cross the Jordan to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall possess it and live in it, and you shall be careful to do all the statutes and the judgments which I am setting before you today.” Joshua 24:26And Joshua wrote these words in
the book of the law of God; and he took a large stone and set it up there under
the oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD. Exodus 21:1-4“Now these are the ordinances
which you are to set before them. “If you buy a Hebrew slave, he
shall serve for six years; but on the seventh he shall go out as a free man
without payment. If he comes alone, he shall go out alone; if he
is the husband of a wife, then his wife shall go out with him. If
his master gives him a wife, and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and
her children shall belong to her master, and he shall go out alone. (The laws go on in this form through Exodus
22:26:) “If you ever take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, you are to return it to him before the sun sets, for that is his only covering; it is his cloak for his body. What else shall he sleep in? And it shall come about that when he cries out to Me, I will hear him, for I am gracious.” Exodus 20:1-17Then God spoke all these words,
saying, “I am the LORD your God, who
brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods
before Me. “You shall not make for
yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth
beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship
them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the
iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth
generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to
thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. “You shall not take the name of
the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes
His name in vain. “Remember the sabbath day, to keep
it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but
the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not
do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant
or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. For in six
days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them,
and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and
made it holy. “Honor your father and your
mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God
gives you. “You shall not murder. “You shall not commit adultery. “You shall not steal. “You shall not bear false
witness against your neighbor. “You shall not covet your
neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant
or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your
neighbor.” Joshua 24:25-28So Joshua made a covenant with the
people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. And
Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a large
stone and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD. Joshua
said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be for a witness against us,
for it has heard all the words of the LORD which He spoke to us; thus it shall
be for a witness against you, so that you do not deny your God.” Then
Joshua dismissed the people, each to his inheritance. Genesis 33:19He bought the piece of land
where he had pitched his tent from the hand of the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s
father, for one hundred pieces of money. Joshua 24:32Now they buried the bones of
Joseph, which the sons of Israel brought up from Egypt, at Shechem, in the
piece of ground which Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor the father of
Shechem for one hundred pieces of money; and they became the inheritance of
Joseph’s sons. Deuteronomy 34:1-3Now Moses went up from the
plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho.
And the LORD showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, and all
Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah as far
as the western sea, and the Negev and the plain in the valley of
Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. 2Kings 2:19-22Then the men of the city said
to Elisha, “Behold now, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord
sees; but the water is bad and the land is unfruitful.” He said,
“Bring me a new jar, and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. He
went out to the spring of water and threw salt in it and said, “Thus says the
LORD, ‘I have purified these waters; there shall not be from there death or
unfruitfulness any longer.’” So the waters have been purified to
this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke. Matthew 4:1-12Then Jesus was led up by the
Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after He
had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. And
the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that
these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is
written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds
out of the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took Him into
the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and
said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is
written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You’; and ‘On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “On the
other hand, it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took Him to a
very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their
glory; and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if
You fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan!
For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’” Then
the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to
Him. Now when Jesus heard that John
had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Luke 19:1-8He entered Mark 10:46-52Then they came to Jericho. And
