Matthew 11:20-24
Then He began to denounce the
cities in which most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent. "Woe
to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in
Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in
sackcloth and ashes. Nevertheless I say to you, it will be more
tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. And
you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will descend to
Hades; for if the miracles had occurred in Sodom which occurred in you, it
would have remained to this day. Nevertheless I say to you that
it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment,
than for you."
Passages mentioning Jesus' presence
and work in Capernaum
Matthew 4:13
[A]nd leaving Nazareth, He came
and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and
Naphtali.
Matthew 11:23 "And you, Capernaum, will not
be exalted to heaven, will you? You will descend to Hades; for if the miracles
had occurred in Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this
day.
Mark 1:21 They went into Capernaum; and
immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach.
Mark 2:1 When He had come back to
Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home.
Mark 9:33 They came to Capernaum; and
when He was in the house, He began to question them, "What were you
discussing on the way?"
Luke 4:23 And He said to them, "No doubt
you will quote this proverb to Me, 'Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard
was done at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.'"
Luke 7:1 When He had completed all His
discourse in the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum.
John 2:12 After this He went down to
Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and
they stayed there a few days.
John 4:46 Therefore He came again to Cana
of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official
whose son was sick at Capernaum.
John 6:24 So when the crowd
saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the
small boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus.
Matthew 9:9-10
As Jesus went on from there, He
saw a man called Matthew, sitting in the tax collector's booth; and He said to
him, "Follow Me!" And he got up and followed Him.
Then it happened that as Jesus
was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and
sinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples.
Mark 2:1-12
When He had come back to
Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home. And
many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the
door; and He was speaking the word to them. And they came, bringing
to Him a paralytic, carried by four men. Being unable to get to Him
because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an
opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying. And
Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." But
some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, "Why
does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God
alone?" Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were
reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, "Why are you reasoning
about these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the
paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven'; or to say, 'Get up, and pick up your
pallet and walk'? But so that you may know that the Son of Man
has authority on earth to forgive sins"-He said to the paralytic, "I
say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home." And he got
up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone,
so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, "We have never
seen anything like this."
Matthew
8:14-15
When Jesus came into Peter's home,
He saw his mother-in-law lying sick in bed with a fever. He
touched her hand, and the fever left her; and she got up and waited on Him.
Mark 1:29-31
And immediately after they came
out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James
and John. Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever;
and immediately they spoke to Jesus about her. And He came to her
and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she
waited on them.
Mark 1:21-28
They went into Capernaum; and
immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach. They
were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having
authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was a man in their
synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, saying, "What
business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to
destroy us? I know who You are-the Holy One of God!" And Jesus
rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!" Throwing him
into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out
of him. They were all amazed, so that they debated among
themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands
even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him." Immediately the news
about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.
Luke 7:1-5
When He had completed all His
discourse in the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum.
And a centurion's slave, who
was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die. When he
heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders asking Him to come and save the
life of his slave. When they came to Jesus, they earnestly implored
Him, saying, "He is worthy for You to grant this to him; for he
loves our nation and it was he who built us our synagogue."
Luke 5:1-11
Now it happened that while the
crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing
by the lake of Gennesaret; and He saw two boats lying at the edge
of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their
nets. And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and
asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began
teaching the people from the boat. When He had finished speaking,
He said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a
catch." Simon answered and said, "Master, we worked hard all night
and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets." When
they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began
to break; so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for
them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that
they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell
down at Jesus' feet, saying, "Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man, O
Lord!" For amazement had seized him and all his companions because
of the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were
James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said
to Simon, "Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men." When
they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.
Mark 6:30-46
The apostles gathered together
with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught. And
He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a
while." (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not
even have time to eat.) They went away in the boat to a secluded
place by themselves.
The people saw them going, and many
recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and
got there ahead of them. When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large
crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a
shepherd; and He began to teach them many things. When it was
already quite late, His disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate
and it is already quite late; send them away so that they may go
into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to
eat." But He answered them, "You give them something to
eat!" And they said to Him, "Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread
and give them something to eat?" And He said to them, "How
many loaves do you have? Go look!" And when they found out, they said, "Five,
and two fish." And He commanded them all to sit down by groups on
the green grass. They sat down in groups of hundreds and of
fifties. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking
up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept
giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the
two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and
they picked up twelve full baskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish. There
were five thousand men who ate the loaves.
Immediately Jesus made His
disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to
Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away. After
bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.
Mark 13:8
"For nation will rise up
against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in
various places; there will also be famines. These things are merely
the beginning of birth pangs."
Romans 8:22
For we know that the whole
creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.
Matthew
5:1-10
When Jesus saw the crowds, He
went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. He
opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,
"Blessed are the poor in
spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are those who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.
"Blessed are the gentle, for
they shall inherit the earth.
"Blessed are those who hunger
and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
"Blessed are the merciful, for
they shall receive mercy.
"Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they shall see God.
"Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called sons of God.
"Blessed are those who have
been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven."
Matthew 7:12
"In everything, therefore,
treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and
the Prophets."
Matthew 4:15
"The land of Zebulun and the
land of Naphtali,
By the way of the sea, beyond
the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles-"
Exodus 20:26
'And you shall not go up by steps
to My altar, so that your nakedness will not be exposed on it.'
Matthew 14:22-36
Immediately He made the
disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He
sent the crowds away. After He had sent the crowds away, He went
up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there
alone. But the boat was already a long distance from the land,
battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. And in the
fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. When
the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is
a ghost!" And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke
to them, saying, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."
Peter said to Him, "Lord, if it
is You, command me to come to You on the water." And He said,
"Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward
Jesus. But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to
sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus stretched
out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why
did you doubt?" When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. And
those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "You are certainly God's
Son!"
When they had crossed over,
they came to land at Gennesaret. And when the men of that place
recognized Him, they sent word into all that surrounding district and
brought to Him all who were sick; and they implored Him that they
might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were
cured.
Matthew
26-69-74
Now Peter was sitting outside
in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, "You too were with
Jesus the Galilean." But he denied it before them all,
saying, "I do not know what you are talking about." When he had
gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to those
who were there, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth." And again
he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man." A
little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one
of them; for even the way you talk gives you away." Then he began
to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a rooster crowed.
