In the late 1860's, the British explorer Charles Warren got permission from the Turkish sultan to dig shafts around the walls. He lowered himself into these, taking measurements and drawing. Just north of the Western Wall plaza, near Wilson's arch, he dug shafts down to bedrock. The street level has been established by modern excavations north and south of the Western Wall.
