ANCIENT CORINTHAncent Corinth

The site of Ancient Corinth was first inhabited in the Neolithic period. The peak period of the city, though, started in the 8th century BC and lasted until its destruction by the Roman general Mummius in 146 BC. The Doric Temple of Apollo built in 550 BC represents the wealth of the city in that period. In the middle of the first century BC, the city was re-inhabited and gradually developed again. It was visited by Apostle Paul in 51/52 CE who converted it in the center of spreading the Gospel to Europe. The city started to decline in 267 CE after the invasion of the Herulians, although it remained inhabited for many centuries through invasions and occupations until its final liberation from the Turks in 1822 CE. It is worth to mention the famous Canal of Corinth, a huge human labor dating back to the end of the 19th century linking the Gulf of Corinth to the Saronic. The Canal is viewed daily by big number of visitors.
