KAVALA - NEAPOLISkavala

One of the most beautiful cities of Greece. It has been colonized by the Athenians towards the 5th. century BC and named originally Neapolis. It was conquered by Phillip II of Macedonia in the middle of the 4th. century BC and as of then it passed under the protection of the city of Philippi. Apostle Paul visited it in 49 CE and predicated the newly born Christianity. It was destroyed by the ghoods in 396 CE and rebuilt in the 5th. century under the name of Christoupolis. It reached great prosperity during the Byzantine period. The Turks in 1380 CE who gave it its actual name Kavala occupied the city. After the Balkan War it was taken by the Bulgarians till its liberation in 1913 CE.

Kavala actually is a medieval city characterized by its Acropolis, which is one of the fortification walls. A series of restorations took place during the last 40 years to rebuild all demolished or damaged old houses and monuments. The most important monuments of Kavala are:
The Acropolis, standing on top of the rocky headland of Panagia and overlooking the modern city of Kavala.
The coastal wall, it is part of the wall of medieval Kavala, built in many architectural phases.
