MYCENAEmycenae

Situated on top of a small hill on the slopes of the Euboea Mountain, Mycenae is the legendary home of the Atreides. It was inhabited since the Neolithic period and reached its peak during the Bronze Age giving its name to a civilization which spread throughout the Greek word. The city continued to be inhabited without interruption till the middle of the 5th century BC when it was conquered by the city of Argos. It was reoccupied in the 3rd century BC for a short period and lately abandoned till the 2nd. Century CE. A visit to the site shows the following monuments:

- The famous cyclopean walls which were built in three stages.
- The main palace situated on the summit of the hill.
- The wall-painted cult center.
- The Lion Gate which contained the treasures exhibited now in the National Museum of Athens.
- The tunnel leading to the subterranean fountain.
- A series of tombs and houses scattered outside the city walls.

The visit of Mycenae is included in most of the programs and itineraries due to its historical importance.
